How Thermal Transfer Label Printing Works

Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon (also called a carbon ribbon or ink ribbon) loaded between the print head and the label stock. As the label passes through the printer, the heated print head melts ink from the ribbon and transfers it onto the label surface. The ink bonds permanently to the label material, creating an image that will not fade from heat exposure, smear from moisture or rub off from handling.

The type of ribbon determines the durability of the finished print. Wax ribbons produce good-quality prints on paper labels for indoor use. Wax-resin ribbons offer improved scratch and smear resistance for general commercial applications. Resin ribbons deliver the highest durability, producing prints that resist chemicals, solvents, extreme heat and outdoor weathering. Resin ribbons are typically used with synthetic label stocks such as polyester or polypropylene for industrial and compliance labelling.
