A child resistant closure is a simple piece of plastic that prevents a serious outcome. It slows a small child down long enough for an adult to intervene. Vision Supply supplies child resistant caps for pharmacy bottles in packs of 50, sized to fit our standard bottle range.

Our caps use the push and turn mechanism, the most common child resistant design in Australian pharmacy. The user presses down and rotates at the same time. A young child usually cannot coordinate both actions. An adult can do it in a second.

When a Child Resistant Closure Is Required

The Poisons Standard, published as the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons, sets out which substances require child resistant packaging in Australia. Requirements vary by schedule, by substance and by pack size.

The short version for a dispensing pharmacy is this. Many scheduled medicines supplied to a household require a child resistant closure unless a specific exemption applies. Your state or territory poisons legislation, the Poisons Standard and your professional guidelines are the authority. Check them for your specific product rather than relying on a general rule.

Beyond the legal minimum, plenty of pharmacies apply child resistant closures more widely than required. Any preparation that would harm a child if swallowed is a candidate, whether the standard demands it or not.

Fitting the Cap to the Bottle

A child resistant cap only works if it matches the bottle neck. The thread size has to be right and the liner has to seat.

Never force a cap onto a thread it was not made for. A cross-threaded cap looks closed and is not. That is worse than no cap at all, because the pharmacist and the patient both believe the bottle is secure.

Testing the Closure at the Bench

Build a habit into the dispensing workflow. After capping, invert the bottle and give it a light shake. Then try to open it with one hand using only a turn, without pressing down. If it opens, the cap has not engaged. Recap and test again.

This takes two seconds and it catches the failure mode that matters.

Counselling the Patient

A child resistant cap creates a new problem. Some patients cannot open it. Arthritis, hand weakness, tremor and reduced grip all make push and turn closures difficult.

Show the patient how the cap works at handover. Confirm they can open and close it themselves before they leave. Where a patient genuinely cannot manage the closure and there are no children in the household, a non child resistant cap may be supplied at your professional discretion, subject to your state requirements. Document that decision.

Remind every patient that a child resistant cap is a delay, not a lock. Medicines still need to be stored up high, out of sight and out of reach.

Ordering and Storage

Caps are supplied in packs of 50. Most dispensing pharmacies hold a rolling stock of two or three neck sizes to match their bottle range.

Store caps in their bag or box. Loose caps in an open drawer collect dust and hair, and a contaminated liner compromises the seal on a liquid preparation.
